This practical handbook for the novice breeder, experienced stud owner Jane van Lennep describes the pleasures and perils of breeding a foal and takes the reader step-by-step through the whole procedure. Beginning with an evaluation of the mare, the choice of a stallion, and a look at what happens at stud, the book continues with advice on how to care for the in-foal mare and a detailed look at the three stages of labour, the common problems and how to deal with them, and the care of the foal for the first few vital hours. Handling, weaning, castration, paddock and stable management are explained in detail, and there is valuable information on the care of youngstock from one to three years plus expert hints on showing the mare and foal.
For almost twenty-five years, the author has written for magazines, such as Riding, Horse and Rider, Pony, Horse Sense and Essex Rider. Her professional qualifications include the British Horse Society Stable Managers Certificate and National Pony Society Diploma. She examines up to Diploma level for the NPS and is also an assessor for the National Vocational Qualification. As well as teaching horse industry trainees Jane van Lennep also lectures at evening classes and to groups such as Round Table and Rotary Club. During her career with horses, she has participated in a wide range of competitive activities. A pinnacle of her success was winning the British National Championship with Triumphal Chant, an Arab Stallion. She lives in Essex.
